Full Stop for New US Players in Microgaming Casinos

In November 2008 it became clear that Microgaming is making a full stop for new US players in their casinos. Players already active in a casino powered by Microgaming will not be kicked out but many expect that there will be a lot of confusion regarding payment and accounts also for the existing players. The American anti online gambling law, UIEGA, is still in full force but there are speculations that the reason for Microgaming’s current actions could be result of the outcome of the American elections.

Already in 1999 there was an attempt to regulate online gambling but it failed in the Senate. In 2006 George W. Bush signed the Unlawful Internet Gambling and Enforcement Act, making into a law. This law was incorporated into the SAFE Port Act which serves to improve security in US ports. The law has been disputed ever since it was passed and in 2007 Congressman Barney Frank tried to overturn the gambling parts of the Act by pointing at how it restricts the rights of the individual American citizen.

The UIEGA doesn’t outlaw gaming per se but rather transactions of money for the purpose of casino gaming online. Microgaming had already prohibited players from the 13 US States that outlaw gambling but left their casinos open to other US players that could and were willing to fund their

online casino accounts through methods that circumvent the UIEGA. The Act outlaws funds going to betting and wagering but it doesn’t specify exactly what betting and wagering is only what it is not. This created a grey zone where some types of gaming were allowed and could be found side by side with the types of games that were questionable.

The current actions of Microgaming could be because of the Kentucky case towering over the company’s head. This case has threatened Microgaming’s website despite the fact that no gaming is to be found on the site. While it is clear that the UIEGA presents problems for

online gaming providers to deal with American customers it is more likely that Microgaming has closed down for US business as a strategic move. With the new Democratic government in the USA changes to the law against online gambling are expected. Companies that act in accordance with the current law will stand a better chance to receive gambling licenses once this will be possible again.
